Welcome to Arvier, Valle d'Aosta

The Municipality of Arvier, Valle d'Aosta

Arvier is situated 776 metres above sea level in a small hollow which demonstrates man’s tenacity in using all the available land. Here, in fact, the famous "Enfer d'Arvier" red wine is produced from grapes growing on steep terraces. Dominating the village is the Romanesque bell tower with double and triple lancet windows, pyramid-shaped spire to the left of St Sulpice parish church.

The name Arvier derives from the ancient word: "Arwa", a pre-Roman term for spruce. The castle, built in the late 13th century belonged to the feudal landlords of Arvier, but is now unfortunately in a poor state of repair.

The village of Leverogne is particularly interesting due to its harmonious blend of medieval and latterly-constructed buildings.

A traditional local dish from Valle d’Aosta is "Carbonada", made of beef (occasionally venison) cut into small pieces and cooked with vegetables and spices after being marinated in copious red wine for 12 hours. Naturally, the most suitable wine for this is “Enfer d'Arvier".
